Weston's Story
Beth and Avery Greenlee's world changed on Saturday, January 30, 2010.  That's the day the couple found out that they would deliver Weston very soon.  Beth developed a disorder during her pregnancy called Preeclampsia.  Preeclampsia, also known as pregnancy-induced hypertension or toxemia, is a disorder that generally develops late in pregnancy or after 20 weeks gestation and is characterized by a sudden onset of high blood pressure, excessive swelling and protein in the urine.  The cause of preeclampsia is still not fully understood, and the only "cure" for the condition is to deliver the baby.

On Tuesday February 2nd, Weston Avery Greenlee was delivered.  He weighed 1.2 pounds.  Weston only lived for a short time before he passed away on Thursday February 4th.

After Weston's passing, Beth and her husband, Avery, decided to set up a foundation and annual golf tournament, Greenlee Preeclampsia Research Fund and The Weston Cup, so that they can help raise money for MUSC's preeclampsia research.

"With the success of last years tournament in mind, Avery and I would like to raise $15,000 from this year's Weston Cup," said Beth Greenlee.  Approximately five to eight percent of pregnancies are affected by preeclampsia.  It, and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, are a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death.  It is responsible for approximately 76,000 maternal deaths and half a million infant deaths worldwide annually. The Greenlee's encourage those who cannot participate in The Weston Cup to make a donation through the MUSC Foundation by choosing Greenlee Preeclampsia Research Fund; fund number:  04740.
