MUSC Bariatric Surgery Program

bariatric surgery PROGRAM

Why MUSC?

The MUSC Bariatric Surgery Center is South Carolina’s oldest weight loss surgery program. T. Karl Byrne, M.D., director of the program, is the state’s most experienced bariatric surgeon, with more than 20 years of experience and close to 3000 surgical cases. We have been designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence since 2006.

We understand how frustrating it can be to lose weight and keep it off. Our team of experts—highly-skilled surgeons, physician assistants, patient coordinator, dieticians and psychologists—will guide you through the entire process, from selecting the right surgical option to providing you with counseling and nutrition advice.

We provide a comprehensive program of weight loss, nutrition, behavior and metabolic support, including active support groups, group nutrition classes, and award-winning post-surgery programs to keep patients on-track. Our unique adolescent bariatric surgery program is designed to help our youngest patients, and their parents, understand their options and supporting them through surgery as well as post-operatively, so they can achieve success. After weight loss is achieved, MUSC's Plastic Surgery Center can help provide interested patients with options to remove skin or fat, tighten and lift to help clothes fit better and make them feel more comfortable performing their favorite activities.

All bariatric surgeries are performed at Ashley River Tower at MUSC, our state-of-the-art facility with fully equipped operating suites and patient care areas. Our patients benefit from having the most advanced, collaborative medical specialties from MUSC close-by during their surgeries and recoveries.

We accept most commercial insurances, Medicare and Medicaid. Self-pay options and financial counseling is available, as is Bliss complication protection for our self-pay patients.
