Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is safer and more popular than ever before.  The Bariatric Surgery Program at the Medical University of South Carolina began providing gastric bypass surgery in 1993. To date, the program has performed over 1200 bypass surgeries.

In February 2006, t
he MUSC Medical Center was named an American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. The ASBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes bariatric surgery programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.

The MUSC Bariatric Surgery program, which includes experienced mental health professionals, dieticians, nurses and physicians, is dedicated to helping patients safely realize weight loss success. Through this team approach we are able to offer our patients a bariatric surgery program of nationally recognized state-of–the-art care.

We are committed to the provision of the most up-to-date and accurate information possible to ensure that any patient’s decision to undergo a bariatric surgery procedure is an informed one. Further, our mission as a bariatric surgery programs extends far beyond achieving permanent, safe weight loss to include the reversal or improvement of weight related health problems such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) disease, diabetes and many others. 

Lastly, our bariatric surgery program team remains committed to providing bariatric surgery and related care in a compassionate and understanding environment.
