Weight Management Center : Ernie's Weight Loss Story

Note: Confidentiality is of the utmost importance to us at the MUSC Weight Management Center. The patients listed on our website have granted us express permission to share their program results and pictures, as well as their names, with our website visitors.

Before and After Pictures:

Ernie's pictures before his weight loss

Ernie's pictures after his weight loss

Age: 60
Program: Focus
Start Date: 09/10/07
End Date: 01/17/08

Weight Loss: 222.8 to 182.7 (lost 40.1 lbs)
Body Mass Index (BMI): 31.7 to 27.4

Total Cholesterol: 187 (healthy) to 173 (healthier)
LDL (bad) Cholesterol: 116 (high) to 108 (high, but healthier)
VLDL (bad) Cholesterol: 32 (high) to 13 (healthy)
HDL (good) Cholesterol: 39 (low) to 52 (healthy)
Triglycerides: 159 (high) to 63 (healthy)

Body Fat %: 34.1% to 26.5%

Other Notable Successes:
Ernie has continued to work with us by adding visits onto his basic Focus program, and as of 6/23/08, he has continued to do well and has lost an additional 10.9 lbs (down to 171.8 lbs and a BMI of 25.4).

Most notably, Ernie has been able to discontinue a cholesterol medication, both of his blood pressure medications, and has completely eliminated his Type II Diabetes medication!

Overcoming Obstacles (in patient's own words):
"My greatest challenge was a sense of deprivation from not being able to eat the things I liked and was accustomed to eating. It wasn’t that I was hungry - that was seldom a problem - or even that I craved specific things I couldn’t have; it was just the loss of enjoyment of my old eating and drinking habits."

"For me, the challenge was almost entirely mental. The way I stayed (mostly) on-track was by trying to keep my mind occupied with other things, interrupting bad thought patterns by consciously focusing on something else and by avoiding situations in which my will power would be tested. There were some 'Oops!' along the way, of course, but the satisfaction of seeing steady progress towards my goal kept me motivated."

"By closely monitoring my weight, continuing to exercise regularly and keeping in mind the many benefits of a healthy weight, I expect to be able to maintain my weight at the goal reached in the program."

Not intended to portray all results. Of course, individual outcomes vary and depend in part on degree of program adherence. That being said, our patients generally do very well!
