Volunteer : How to Apply

betty adams.jpgWe treasure our volunteers at MUSC. Whether it's providing companionship, delivering flowers and magazines, or greeting patients and their families, MUSC has a lot of opportunity for you to give back.   Our volunteers help fulfill the MUSC mission to provide the best quality health care for our patients.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available to adults and students over the age of 14 at our hospital. Please note that due to the volume of applications we receive, and the specific requirements of the programs we offer, we are unable to place every applicant.

Volunteer Requirements
Please review the requirements below before submitting your application.

  • Commit to a minimum of one 3-4 hour shift per week on the same day at the same time.
  • Fulfill a minimum of 100 volunteer hours per year (Junior Volunteers/Candy Stripers are required to fulfill 72 hours)
  • Volunteers must be 21 years old to volunteer in the Recovery Room and Trauma Unit and have HEP-B documentation.
  • Prospective volunteers must complete a health screening, background check (18 years and older) and formal orientation to MUSC's policies and procedures, as well as orientation to the assigned unit.
  • Volunteers are not permitted in the OR.

Our Application Process
After submitting your on-line application, allow 7-10 days for processing.  Our volunteer recruiters for the Medical Center Hospital, Outpatient Clinics and the Ashley River Tower are Robert Watson and Matthias Frye.  One will contact you for an initial interview.  If you are selected to be a MUSC Volunteer, you will move forward to the orientation process which includes:

Criminal background check (18 and older)
Pre-Placement Health (includes TB skin test)
 General Orientation
 Orientation to selected volunteer area

Summer placements are limited and subject to the 72-hour commitment requirement. Students interested in volunteering during the summer only should be certain of their ability to follow through on the commitment and submit their application by April 1st.

Please note that our program does not provide the opportunity to shadow physicians, nurses, or other health care providers, nor do we allow volunteers to perform any sort of medical procedures.

We provide all of our volunteers training and ongoing support. New volunteers are required to complete general orientation. In addition to your overall orientation you will receive an orientation and training in your particular area of service.
