As part of our community outreach initiative the Adult Volunteer Program at MUSC offers the nationally certified Safe Sitter babysitting course.
These 2 day instructional courses are offered twice a summer in June. The Safe Sitter program is for adolescents between the ages of 11 and 14. Safe Sitter teaches these sitters the skills they need to be successful babysitters from the start! They learn all the activities of daily care, behavior management, first aid and CPR training.Safe Sitter was founded by Dr. Patricia Keener in 1980 after a tragic accident involving a child passing away from choking on a grape while under the care of a babysitter. Moved by the tragic events Dr. Keener started work the very next day on creating a training program for sitters to keep children safe. Their motto is: "Better Sitters Today. Better Parents Tomorrow." Dr. Keener completed her residency training right here at our very own Medical University of South Carolina.Learn more about Safe Sitter
Classes are two days of hands on learning and instruction from the hours of 9am-3pm. The cost of the program is $75 per student and covers all course materials & food for the two days of instruction.
