Transaxillary Robotic Thyroid Surgery at MUSC
I think that the robotic system is a potential revolutionary change in the way we do surgery. This approach is a unique approach here. We make an incision in the armpit, instead of going through the neck. The nice thing is we can avoid any obvious scars and allows us to use a new technology. The Da Vinci robot has a couple unique advantages- and this cannot be overstated. These include a 3-D view, the traditional laparoscopic views are in 2 dimensions, where the robot gives us a real look into space. People that are ideal candidates for the transaxillary approach are people who have smaller nodules, who are thin, and nodules are non-cancerous. When people understand the advantages that this gives to them as a patient, most of them are very excited to have them done.
