Cryotherapy for Precancerous and Cancerous Lesions of the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract
Brenda J. Hoffman, M.D., Chief of Endoscopic Ultrasound at MUSC's Digestive Disease Center, discusses cryotherapy, available at MUSC since February 2013, for the treatment of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the esophagus and stomach. Abnormal tissue is frozen with nitrogen gas and then allowed to thaw. Abnormal cells are killed by this freeze-thaw cycle and healthy cells encouraged to regrow by controlling acidity. Patients experience less chest pain than with radiofrequency ablation.
