MUSC using new magnetic device to treat severe reflux (GERD)
MUSC patient Max Inman was one of the first in South Carolina to be treated with the LINX Reflux Management System. Dr. David Adams implanted the device, a small, flexible ring of magnetic titanium beads, around the lower esophagus via a minimally invasive procedure. LINX avoids some of the side effects of traditional GERD (also referred to as reflux or heartburn) surgery, and patients usually go home the same day and return to a normal diet immediately. If necessary, the device is removable.
