Minimally Invasive Surgical Options
One of the most exciting advancements in valvular surgery is the addition of minimally invasive surgical techniques. For many patients, there are less invasive options for valve repair and replacement, which are performed through much smaller incisions than required for conventional open surgery. Small incisions mean less blood loss, recovery time and scarring than occur in conventional surgery.
In some cases, patients are too sick or have too many surgical risk factors to be considered candidates for traditional, open surgeries, such as aortic valve replacement. New minimally invasive procedures, such as TAVR, are providing new treatment options for these patients.
