Small Bowel Transplant

An intestine transplant may be performed in conjunction with or without a liver transplant. These procedures involve a cadaveric donor. An isolated small bowel transplant is preferred.

Small bowel transplant selection criteria

• Short bowel syndrome
• Bowel motility problems
• Intestinal disease

Since the small intestine is the primary means of absorption, problems and diseases can lead to the inability to eat and digest normally, resulting in malnutrition and dehydration, weakness, fatigue, depression, weight loss and bacterial infection.  These problems are especially difficult for pediatric patients. The transplant team works closely with nutritional and digestive experts to monitor these patients carefully. Referral prior to liver dysfunction is preferred.
