Heart The MUSC Cardiac Transplant Program has been ranked first in the Southeast, and second in the nation in one-year survival rates, according to a report released by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. Since the began in 1987, the MUSC Cardiac Transplant program, consisting of both adult and pediatric programs, has performed over 240 heart transplants resulting in clinical outcomes that exceed the national average. This is the only program of its kind in South Carolina.

Blood & Marrow Transplant Program The MUSC Hollings Cancer Center has been performing autologous and allogeneic blood and marrow transplants (BMT) since 1987. The Blood and Marrow Transplant program was the first of it's kind in South Carolina. Likewise, MUSC has a very active pediatric bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation program.

Kidney Transplant Program Since its beginning in 1968, the MUSC Kidney Transplant program has been staffed by an experienced team of surgeons and specialists who have made tremendous progress in refining the techniques of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and the living donor kidney procedure. Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy allows kidney donors to recover faster with less pain, thus alleviating many of the roadblocks that hinder donation. This promising procedure has helped to increase the number of potential donors.

Adult Simultaneous Kidney/Pancreas, Adult Pancreas Simultaneous pancreas/kidney (SPK) transplantation is the preferred treatment for patients suffering from the secondary and often life-threatening complications associated with Type I diabetes. SPK eliminates the need for dialysis and exogenous insulin, offering superior metabolic control. This is a life-changing procedure for fairly young patients who are insulin dependent and require dialysis.

Liver & Small Bowel Transplant Programs The MUSC Transplant Center and the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology collaborate in the care of patients with liver disease. In addition to conventional cadaveric transplantation, MUSC is performing living donor transplantation from adults to both children and adults. This innovation saves lives because donor organs are scarce and there are no life support systems to sustain patients with liver failure. An small bowel transplant may be performed in conjunction with or without a liver transplant. These procedures involve a cadaveric donor.

Small Bowel Transplant Program Since the small intestine is the primary means of absorption, problems and diseases can lead to the inability to eat and digest normally, resulting in malnutrition and dehydration, weakness, fatigue, depression, weight loss and bacterial infection. These problems are especially difficult for pediatric patients. The transplant team works closely with nutritional and digestive experts to monitor these patients carefully.
