Adult Lung Transplants at MUSC
MUSC has received certification from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to launch its Adult Lung Transplant Program. Evaluation of patients with advanced lung disease who may be eligible for transplant began in November 2010.
The Lung Transplant Team is headed by pulmonologist Timothy P. Whelan, M.D., who serves as medical director, and cardiothoracic surgeon, Chadrick E. Denlinger, M.D., as surgical director. The team also includes cardiothoracic surgeon, John S. Ikonomidis, M.D., Ph.D., chief of cardiothoracic surgery. MUSC's Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine also is integrally involved in the care of patients with advanced lung disease.
Patients typically in need of a lung transplant have advanced cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), or cystic fibrosis.
Contact the MUSC Transplant Center to schedule appointments or ask questions about MUSC lung transplantations.
