A Second Chance At Life
Kim Roberts of Kershaw, SC, was accustomed to liver problems. His trouble began in the 1970s when doctors discovered he had Hepatitis C. Treatment with Interferon kept the hepatitis under control for a while, but three years ago MUSC physicians found a tumor on his bile duct, and Kim went on the waiting list for a transplant. After only a few weeks on the waiting list, he received his transplant. However, within three months, he knew there was a problem with the new liver. He became increasingly sick until one day his parents found him in a coma and took him back to MUSC. Again his name went on the waiting list, but this time, it took nearly five months to get the liver. “I was really in bad shape — down to 99 pounds,” said Kim. “I thought I wasn’t going to make it.” Three days before his 54th birthday, he received the call to come in for his transplant. "This time, things went really well. Dr. Baliga did both of the transplants, and he and the whole department are amazing. They really treat you right.” Seven months after his second liver transplant, Kim had put on 50 pounds and started playing golf again. This time, he’s had no problems and is doing just about everything he wants to do. “I’m a household name at the Transplant Center,” he said. “It was worth it to be able to feel good again, but I sure hope I won’t need another one.” |
