ACL Surgery & Rehabilitation

-Roger and Diane Newman, parents of Sarah Newman, basketball player at Academic Magnet
“The Sports Medicine team provides the highest level of comprehensive care, and we have complete faith in them. When our daughter tore her ACL playing basketball we were fortunate that a member of Dr Geier's team was immediately available to assess her as part of an outreach program he is developing with high school and AAU programs. The apparent injury was so slight but he quickly recognized it for what it might be and intervened to prevent her from experiencing further injury until she could be evaluated the next day. Whenever your child has a serious injury- especially one that is sports related - you want to be certain that you are getting the best care possible. That is what we found with Dr Geier, Mike Barr (physical therapist) and all the others at MUSC Sports Medicine. She was well prepared for surgery and was fully aware of what would be necessary for total recovery. Her surgery was expertly done and uncomplicated. However, with ACL repairs the real care comes after the surgery where returning to full health and capability requires weeks and months of difficult rehabilitation.  Mike Barr and the rehab staff were caring and supportive but also demanding and tough. They taught her about prevention of future injury through proper conditioning and exercise and have repeatedly made themselves available to our daughter on a same day basis as she has needed follow up evaluation or advice. As a doctor myself, our experience with the MUSC Sports Medicine team motivates me to want to provide a higher level of care in my own practice. The MUSC Sports Medicine team is simply amazing and we are very grateful for the fact that they were here when our daughter was injured”

–Cheri Williams, mother of Lauren Williams, basketball player at First Baptist High School
“When my daughter tore her ACL, it was a painful and frightening time. After several frustrating attempts to seek treatment elsewhere, we were referred to Dr. Geier and Mike Barr. With the first consultation I knew we had made the right choice. It was such a relief to have Dr. Geier explain to us about the injury, the necessary surgery, and the follow up physical therapy that was required. He patiently answered all of our questions and prepared us for what to expect with the surgery and rehab. The personalized and professional approach offered by both Dr. Geier and Mike made a difficult time so much more bearable.

My daughter has made remarkable progress. The scar is barely visible. With all the positive support, encouragement, and progressive treatment, my daughter has the confidence and healing that she needs to return to the sport she loves.”

Shoulder Surgery & Rehabilitation

–Cathy Cole, mother of Andrew Cole, football player at Moultrie Middle/Wando High School
“Our son, Andy, injured his shoulder playing football for his middle school. After seeing Dr. Geier (who also treated our daughter for shin splints and knee problems), it was determined that surgery was necessary to repair his shoulder so he could continue playing sports in high school. The one-on-one care post-surgery and physical therapy has been phenomenal. We have received top notch care throughout this 6 month process. Mike is a fantastic physical therapist. His is extremely knowledgeable in shoulder injuries and the rehab for them. We have been so pleased with our care and the communication between Mike and Dr. Geier regarding Andy’s care. I would recommend this practice to anyone!”

–Linda Ett, mother of Rachel Ett, Drum Major at Wando High School
Dr. Geier was our 2nd opinion. We were already resigned to the fact that my 15 year old daughter needed shoulder surgery as told to us by her previous physician. Dr. Geier and Mike Barr worked as a team to strengthen her shoulder week by week. Mike stayed with my daughter personally at every session to oversee her exercises and Dr. Geier was there in the exercise room every Thursday to measure her progress and work with Mike. I firmly believe their remarkable team approach is what saved my daughter from having to have the surgery. It would have been very easy for Dr. Geier to agree with our 1st opinion and recommend surgery, but he wanted to try all other options first. I have the most respect and admiration for him.”

Knee Rehabilitation

–Scott Dehbozorgi, Charleston Men’s Premier League Division soccer player
“I have had an excellent experience with my knee rehabilitation. Dr. Geier and Renee Garrison (as well as the other sports medicine therapists I had contact with) were very helpful and upbeat in all phases of recovery. I always knew where I stood in recovery, what my limits were, and how hard to push any particular exercises. The soccer specific exercises were a great addition to my program. Although I hope to never need them again, there is no doubt where I would go in the event I needed any rehabilitation in the future. Thanks to all.”

–Lee Brockman, tennis pro at the Country Club of Charleston
“I was to the point where I was convinced that I would need extensive surgery on both knees. I was having severe pain every day, and I had a hard time getting in and out of bed. Within 1 month of seeing Dr. Geier and Mike Barr for rehab, I was back on the courts playing tennis pain free and did not have to have surgery. They helped rehab me back to the level I was at before my injury.”

-Nancy Guidry
“From day one, everyone in your office worked very hard to create a great experience for me to rehab my knee. My first encounter was with Margaret, whose calming demeanor and professional attitude was terrific. She worked with me to accommodate my schedule and set up my appointments in a timely fashion. Once I arrived for my first PT session, I had the good fortune to be assigned to Renee Garrison. She was excellent. She carefully listened and devised a program to really get me back on my feet. She was extremely diligent and constantly made adjustments to my program based on my progress. Whenever I was in pain or anxious about my progress, she was very reassuring. She really made me work hard, in a very positive way.

I am grateful for everything you all did for me in PT. My goal was to be feeling well enough to enjoy my trip to South Africa and not be physically limited in any way. I feel that my goal was achieved. Thanks to your entire team, as well as Dr. Geier and Anita in his office, my entire experience was very satisfying. I will always be a grateful patient.”

General Care & Rehabilitation

– Amanda McCarty, collegiate swimmer
“My experience with the MUSC Sports Medicine Clinic was phenomenal. I have been to a handful of other sports medicine clinics for this and other injuries and have never experienced such quality service or found such a capable and caring group of health care professionals. The staff bent over backwards to ensure that I received the best available treatment. They truly listened to my entire story and treated me as an individual not just another patient. I appreciated how honest and upfront my physical therapist, Mike Barr, and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Geier, were with me about all of my options as well as my progress. They involved me in the decision making process and made sure that I was knowledgeable about my condition and rehabilitation. I was completely calm and confident going into my surgery and rehab knowing that I was in the best hands possible. I would recommend MUSC Sports Medicine without reservation.”

Femur Fracture & Rehabilitation

–Parents of William Ballentine, South Carolina ODP State Soccer Player
“We love MUSC Sports Medicine!! Dr. Geier and Mike Barr provided our son with the best care he could have received!

Our son suffered a severe femur fracture while at a soccer camp in NC. After receiving stabilization care in NC, we began our care with MUSC Sports Medicine. We were scared about the rehab and the impact his injury would have on his future. Dr. Geier was always straight with us - patient in his explanations and expert at calming our fears. William was back on the field 6 months sooner than we ever expected him to be. Dr. Geier has watched him carefully post fracture as well. When a growth discrepancy was noted, William was quickly followed up by Dr. Jennifer Hooker - who is also super!

It was clear at every visit that Dr. Geier and his staff were dedicated to the safe care of athletes. He is passionate not only about injury recovery but also injury prevention that is the key to an athlete reaching full potential. We would not have had William taken care of by anyone else!”

Knee Surgery & Rehabilitation

–Whitney Frail, student at College of Charleston, soccer player
“Growing up, my life revolved around the game of soccer. I spent all of my free time either at soccer practice and games or with my teammates. This all changed eight years ago when I sustained my first knee injury. I underwent my first operation in 2000 when I was only fourteen years old. It was from this point on that I would spend more time in physical therapy than I would on the soccer field.

In 2005, I accepted an athletic scholarship to play soccer in college. By this time, I had already had three knee surgeries. But college soccer was my childhood dream. The thought of me being able to play soccer in college is what kept me in the game. During my freshman year in college, I sustained a knee injury that ultimately changed my life. I decided to transfer back home and give up my dream.

In 2006, I underwent my fourth knee surgery. It was after this surgery that I was convinced my knee would never get better. Then, in 2007, I was referred to Dr. David Geier. At first I was reluctant to go to another doctor; after all, I had been under the care of the same physician for the past six years. But I realized that after four unsuccessful surgeries and failed rehabilitation, a second opinion would be advantageous.

Going to Dr. Geier was the best decision I have ever made. Dr. Geier is unlike any physician I know. He convinced me that my knee could and would get better. After my initial visit with Dr. Geier, I began physical therapy with Michael Barr. These two individuals were determined to do only what was in my best interest as their patient. After some time spent in physical therapy, the three of us decided that I should undergo one last knee surgery. Dr. Geier and Michael Barr were there for me whenever I needed them before and after surgery. The quality of care I received from Dr. Geier and Michael Barr at MUSC exceeded my expectations and easily surpasses any other health care I have ever received in the past. Dr. Geier is an exceptional surgeon who is clearly dedicated to ensuring that his patients receive the best care possible. Michael Barr is the physical therapist that I hope to soon become. I view both of these individuals as my role models and I am very grateful for all they have done for me. Their hard work and dedication has helped me more than they will ever know. It is because of Dr. Geier and Michael Barr that I will be able to play soccer again.”
