Dr. Merrell is a physiatrist (physical medicine and rehabilitation physician) whose sports interests include overuse and chronic injuries, problems associated with distance running and training, low back pain, and adaptive sports for those with physical impairments.
After received his undergraduate degree in Zoology from Miami University in Ohio and his medical degree from the Ohio State University School of Medicine, he completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. Following residency, he joined the faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina in 2007. Dr. Merrell is the Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services and the Director of Amputee Services for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. With additional special interests in electromyography, exercise training, non-surgical spine care, and spinal cord injury, his must recent publications include, “Rehabilitation outcomes after infection-related spinal cord disease: a retrospective analysis” and “Infection-Related Spinal Cord Disease” in the book Topics in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation.
