The MUSC Sleep Center offers the following types of studies:
Sleep Clinic Consultation
The patient will be evaluated by one of our Sleep Specialists prior to scheduling a study to determine the appropriate type of study to be performed.
Diagnostic Sleep Study
This test records several body functions while you are asleep including brain activity, eye movements, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, heart rate and rhythm, breathing rate and rhythm, snoring, and body movements.
Diagnostic Sleep Study with CPAP Intervention
CPAP is an air machine that treats sleep apnea. CPAP is initiated if the patient meets criteria determined by their physician.
Full Night CPAP or Bi-level Titration
These tests are ordered for patients who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. They record the same measurements as the diagnostic sleep study with the addition of a CPAP mask.
Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) Study
This test is used as a diagnostic procedure for patients suspected of having narcolepsy. It is a daytime study that follows a diagnostic study.
Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) Study
This test is used to determine if someone can remain awake when circumstances are right for sleeping. It is usually mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) for truck drivers, airline pilots, etc.
