MUSC is designated as a Premium Cardiac Specialty Center by UnitedHealthcare through a program that helps consumers and healthcare providers make informed health care decisions regarding implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). It means MUSC is the only medical center in the Lowcountry that delivers consistent quality cardiac care in line with criteria based on nationally recognized medical standards. Designations are awarded based on ICD data from 1,450 US hospitals submitted to the Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Registry. This quality initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between the National Cardiovascular Database Registry, jointly sponsored by the American College of Cardiology, the Heart Rhythm Society and UnitedHealthcare. MUSC is one of three designated centers among 22 participating South Carolina hospitals and the only one within 150 miles of Charleston.
