This site is provided by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.  It focuses on the quality measures recommended by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

The Leapfrog Group
The Leapfrog Group measures hospitals on four, broad criteria: Does the hospital use a Computerized Physician Order Entry System (CPOE)? What is the quality of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staffing? How does a hospital rank for several high risk treatments? Does the hospital rank well on the Leapfrog Safe Practices Score?

The Joint Commission
This organization does periodic audits of all aspects of patient safety and quality performance measures and then provides accreditation for those hospitals that meet their standards.  MUSC is a Joint Commission accredited health care organization.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
Also part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the agency provides a "Choosing a Hospital Worksheet."
