Our Team

MUSC’s Brain Stimulation Laboratory is a world leader in the study of innovative uses of electromagnetic therapies for brain disorders.  Dr. Mark George and his colleagues in the Brain Stimulation Division, are studying the use of ECT, TMS, DBS and VNS for depression and other indications, including pain reduction, Parkinson’s disease, post-stroke rehabilitation, auditory hallucinations and ringing in the ears. 

Mark George, M.D., Director, Brain Stimulation Laboratory, Board Certified in Neurology and Psychiatry, with 25-plus years of experience in treatment-resistant depression.  Editor-in-Chief, Brain Stimulation.

Baron Short, M.D., MSCR, Board Certified in Psychiatry and Internal Medicine, with 10 years of experience in co-morbid psychiatric and medical illness, mood disorders and brain stimulation.

Istvan Takacs, M.D., neurosurgeon, with 20-plus years experience in deep brain stimulation, Gamma-knife and LINAC radiosurgery, frameless neurosurgical navigation systems, and other minimally invasive techniques.

Carol Burns, RN, MSN, APRN-BC, Clinical Nurse Coordinator, with 30-plus years experience in psych nursing, 25 of which are in ECT.
