THE INTERSECTION OF PSYCHIATRY AND THE LAW

Rabiya Hasan, M.D.

Assistant Professor

Rabiya K. Hasan, M.D., holds a position as Assistant Professor with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Hasan is Board-certified in Psychiatry, Board-certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, a Diplomat with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and fellowship trained in Forensic Psychiatry. Dr. Hasan completed her residency training in Psychiatry and fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry at MUSC.

 Dr. Hasan is one of the attending psychiatrists on the youth inpatient psychiatric unit and works at the STAR programs, which are intensive, comprehensive outpatient treatment programs for children and adolescents with severe behavioral and emotional disturbances.  She also provides psychiatric consult services for pediatric inpatients at the MUSC Children’s Hospital.  She actively participates as a faculty member to train and supervise medical students, residents, and fellows.

 Dr. Hasan is experienced in performing criminal and civil evaluations for the defense and plaintiff, including Competency to Stand Trial and Criminal Responsibility and Capacity to Conform. She also has experience in performing evaluations for Mitigation, Violence Risk Assessments, Emotional Harm and Disability, and Conservator and Guardianship.  She has extensive experience in working with patients in adult penitentiaries and in the juvenile justice system. She is qualified as a consulting and testifying expert, and has been qualified as an expert in Probate Court and Court of General Sessions.
