This hands-on workshop series offers attendees the opportunity to interact with experts in a small group setting on topics related to mental health. Workshops will be interactive with an emphasis on audience participation in discussions, skill-building exercises, etc. Participation in workshops will impact attendee’s teaching, clinical, policy, and/or administrative work. |

South Carolina Mental Health Law for Attorneys: How to Proceed with a Mentally Disordered Criminal Defendant Susan C. This workshop will focus on South Carolina mental health laws regarding criminal competencies and mental state defenses such as criminal responsibility. A review of South Carolina mental health law and procedure will be conducted, as well as instruction in recognizing when to refer defendants for mental health evaluations. Coverage of related topics such as psychological testing for such defendants and up-to-date case law influencing current practice will also be included. Case examples will be used to highlight specific issues and facilitate participant interaction. |

Professional ethics is concerned with whether the practitioner is acting according to the standards of practice in the field. This workshop examines boundary crossings such as touch, self-disclosure, gifts, borrowing money, bartering and dual relationships. The presenter will distinguish between boundary crossings and boundary violations and will also identify the warning signs in crossing therapeutic boundaries. |

Methods to implement research-based interventions to reduce or eliminate symptoms of severe anxiety disorders, namely avoidance, hyperarousal, and intrusive ideation will be discussed with a particular focus on using exposure-based treatments; from provision of rationale, to creation of exposure hierarchies, to in session imaginal exposure practices. |
