Motivating Clients to Change Using Brief Feedback Interventions

Workshop Description

Time is at a premium in today’s healthcare industry and strategies designed to maximize the impact of brief interventions are vital. This workshop will provide participants with an overview of the utility of feedback in brief motivational interventions. Emphasis is placed on reflective listening skills, the importance of change talk in motivating behavior change, and practical ways to elicit change talk using motivational interviewing techniques.

Objectives
At the completion of this session the participant should be able to:
  1. Describe the general factors involved in effective, brief feedback interventions

  2. Recognize the importance of change talk in facilitating behavior change

  3. Apply motivational interviewing strategies to elicit change talk while providing feedback to clients

Speaker Biography

Joshua P. Smith, PhD has received specialized, MINT-certified training in motivational interviewing.  Complementary experience has included co-authoring a treatment manual and participating as a study therapist as part of an NIH-funded clinical trial testing a brief intervention for college hazardous drinkers with co-occurring social anxiety.  Additional experience has been gained through hundreds of feedback sessions with clients experiencing a range of psychiatric difficulties.
