| Workshop Description | |
| This workshop will focus on SC mental health laws regarding criminal competencies and mental state defenses such as criminal responsibility. A review of SC mental health law and procedure will be conducted, as well as instruction in recognizing when to refer defendants for mental health evaluations. Coverage of related topics such as psychological testing for such defendants and up-to-date case law influencing current practice will also be included. Case examples will be used to highlight specific issues and facilitate participant interaction. | |

| At the completion of this session the participant should be able to: | |
| Critically evaluate legal options for a mentally disordered defendant per South Carolina law. Recognize when to refer for mental health evaluations and when to utilize mental state defenses. Enhance comprehension of related legal procedure and current case law affecting practice.

| Speaker Biography | |
| Dr. Knight is a Board-Certified Forensic Psychologist by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Psychiatryand Behavioral Sciences, Forensics Division. She has completed internship training in conducting psychological forensic evaluations at the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, NC, and completion of post-doctoral training in forensic psychology at the USC-Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles. Currently, Dr. Knight is conducting Competency to Stand Trial and Criminal Responsibility/Capacity to Conform evaluations for the court system via the South Carolina State Department of Mental Health. | |
