Professional Ethics: Boundary Crossings in Clinical Practice
Presentation Dates: November 14, 2009, February 13, 2010 OR May 8, 2010
Workshop Description
Professional ethics is concerned with whether the practitioner is acting according to the standards of practice in the field.  This workshop examines boundary crossings such as touch, self-disclosure, gifts, borrowing money, bartering and dual relationships.  The presenter will distinguish between boundary crossings and boundary violations, identifying warning signs in crossing therapeutic boundaries.
Objectives
At the completion of this session the participant should be able to:
  1. Apply ethical analysis through self-monitoring and self-reflection
  2. Concentrate on boundary maintenance and monitor boundary crossing using sound ethical judgment
  3. Execute strategies to help resolve the ambiguity that is always present when handling complex ethical issues
  4. Act proactively and manage boundary crossings to avoid boundary violations
