Empirically-Based Treatment Strategies for Severe Anxiety Disorders such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Presentation Dates: September 12, 2009 OR March 13, 2010
Workshop Description
Methods to implement research-based interventions to reduce or eliminate symptoms of severe anxiety disorders, namely avoidance, hyperarousal, and intrusive ideation will be discussed with a particular focus on using exposure-based treatments; from provision of rationale, to creation of exposure hierarchies, to in session imaginal exposure practices.
Objectives
At the completion of this session the participant should be able to:
  1. Provide rationale of exposure-based treatment to patients
  2. Develop exposure hierarchies with patients
  3. Engage in therapist directed exposure with patients
Speaker Biography
Dr. Acierno is the Director of the PTSD Clinical Team at the VA Medical Center in Charleston, and a senior faculty member and Professor of Psychiatry at the MUSC National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center. He is on the Department of Defense / Veteran's Administration PTSD Treatment Guidelines Executive Research Group, and is PI on several grants in which exposure therapies are being evaluated.
