Workshop Overview

This hands-on workshop series offers attendees the opportunity to interact with experts in a small group setting on topics related to mental health. Workshops will be interactive with an emphasis on audience participation in discussions, skill-building exercises, etc. Participation in workshops will impact attendee’s teaching, clinical, policy, and/or administrative work.

 
Registration

Registration fee is $150 per workshop (unless otherwise indicated).
The fee includes workshop materials, credit processing and snacks.

Recognizing Mental Illness for Non-Medical Professionals

This workshop is organized for non-medical professionals who frequently work with or are contacted by people with emotional or psychiatric issues.  It is appropriate for clergy, teachers and other service industry professionals.

South Carolina Mental Health Law for Attorneys: How to Proceed with a Mentally Disordered Criminal Defendant

This workshop will focus on South Carolina mental health laws regarding criminal competencies and mental state defenses such as criminal responsibility. A review of South Carolina mental health law and procedure will be conducted, as well as instruction in recognizing when to refer defendants for mental health evaluations. Coverage of related topics such as psychological testing for such defendants and up-to-date case law influencing current practice will also be included. Case examples will be used to highlight specific issues and facilitate participant interaction.
 
THE COST FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS $100.

This workshop is designed to help educate health care providers on how to better work with their patients towards a goal of successful weight management. The aim is to familiarize attendees with the dietary, exercise, and behavioral concepts and approaches through interactive didactics and discussions of real-life scenarios.

Time is at a premium in today’s healthcare industry and strategies designed to maximize the impact of brief interventions are vital. This workshop will provide participants with an overview of the utility of feedback in brief motivational interventions. Emphasis is placed on reflective listening skills, the importance of change talk in motivating behavior change, and practical ways to elicit change talk using motivational interviewing techniques.

Sexually Active Youth and Teens: What's a therapist (and parent) to do?

The goals of this workshop are to delineate normative and nonnormative sexual behavior in children and teens, to discuss methods for identifying youth unsafe sex behaviors, and to describe methods to reduce youth unsafe sex behaviors.

Group Therapy with Older Adults

Using interactive activities and exercises, as well as film media and handouts, attendees will learn aspects of group work with older adults who experience anxiety and depression. While the predominant theme is cognitive behavioral therapy, attendees will also be exposed to the use of poetry and mindfulness therapies.

Update on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Professional Ethics: Boundary Crossings in Clinical Practice

Professional ethics is concerned with whether the practitioner is acting according to the standards of practice in the field.  This workshop examines boundary crossings such as touch, self-disclosure, gifts, borrowing money, bartering and dual relationships.  The presenter will distinguish between boundary crossings and boundary violations and will also identify the warning signs in crossing therapeutic boundaries.

Empirically Based Treatment Strategies for Severe Anxiety Disorders such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Methods to implement research-based interventions to reduce or eliminate symptoms of severe anxiety disorders, namely avoidance, hyperarousal, and intrusive ideation will be discussed with a particular focus on using exposure-based treatments; from provision of rationale, to creation of exposure hierarchies, to in session imaginal exposure practices.
