9th Annual Social Work Conference: The Changing Face of Mental Health
October 22, 2009
MUSC Institute of Psychiatry Auditorium 67 President Street, Charleston, SC 29425
| Conference Overview | As we face economic spiral and health care reform, there have been many changes in leadership, resources, and funding for behavioral health. Programs have closed, budgets slashed, and services have declined. With economic stressors high, social workers are asked to do more with less. Students are having difficulties securing field placements, entering the field, and maintaining jobs as the economy shifts. As a profession, we need to remain focused on the strengths. Many challenges present as resources shrink. As social workers we advocate for social change, policy development, and justice. Collaborate with us as various speakers discuss the challenges ahead as we address changes in mental health services here in South Carolina and strategies for the future. back to top | | | Conference Faculty | Charlotte Anderson Director, 211 Hotline; Trident United Way Candy Bates-Quinn, MEd, LPC, GCDFI Coordinator; Guidance & Counseling, Home School Charleston County School District Arlene Bowers Andrews, PhD, LISW Carolina Distinguished Professor of Social Work; University of South Carolina Nancy Campbell, MSW Associate Director and Chief Operations Officer; Ralph A. Participants are encouraged to explore the meaning of biases, stereotypes, and prejudices, and are then challenged to identify personal barriers to effective service delivery. At the completion of this workshop, the participant should be able to: Recognize qualities and traits that identify various cultural groups (based on ethnic, racial, religious, age, gender, disability and other differences). Break down the "us/they" barriers by examining widely-held ideas which undermine cultural competency - Utilize tools which facilitate interactions with diverse clients/patients in and out of the workplace.
| | Post-Conference Workshop: Friday, October 23, 2009; 8:30am-12:00noon | | Managing Workplace Violence | In today’s increasingly stressful society, human behavior has grown progressively more violent. Never has this been more relevant than in the American workplace, where most of us spend at least half of our waking hours each day. This training seeks to draw out the uncomfortable questions that we sometimes ask ourselves "can violence happen in my workplace" and "what can we do about it?" At the completion of this workshop, the participant should be able to: Recognize the history of workplace violence as well as the varying types of interpersonal violence that are common in the workplace Recognize the danger signs that increase one’s vulnerability to workplace violence - Develop a personal as well as agency-wide plan for prevention and response to violence.
