Helen M. Pettinati, PhD
Depression and Alcohol Dependence
Presentation Time: 9:50 - 10:50am
Presentation Description

This session will offer a better understanding of co-morbid alcohol dependence and depression is increasing the demand for specialized treatments for individuals with these two co-occurring disorders.  The National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, conducted in 2001-2002, revealed that among individuals with a substance use disorder, approximately 20% reported a concurrent mood disorder. As awareness of co-morbidity grows in the medical community, so does the demand for specialized treatment for individuals with co-occurring substance and depressive disorders.  Investigations into pharmacotherapy for co-morbid alcohol and depression is provoking innovative research and developments in a previously unexamined area.

Speaker Objectives
At the completion of this session the participant should be able to:
  1. Determine best course of treatment for patients with both drinking problems and major depression.

  2. Determine if a differential DSM-IV diagnosis of major vs substance-induced depression at intake changes predictions re: drinking outcomes or depression.
