Conference Overview

The Day of Discovery program, hosted by the MUSC Institute of Psychiatry, is a one-day conference held to inform those in the medical and mental health professions about new advances in the field of psychiatry.

This Day of Discovery program will provide attendees with an introduction to the attitudes, values, knowledge, and skills related to understanding, assessing, and treating co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders.  Attention will be given to basic, intermediate, and advanced levels of proficiency in these areas, with the goal of assisting providers at all skill levels enhance their ability to treat individuals who have co-occurring disorders.

Course Objectives
At the completion of this program, participants should be able to:
  • (Book) Identify socially anxious individuals among alcohol treatment seekers

  • (Book) Identify at risk drinkers among anxiety treatment seekers

  • (Book) Understand treatment options for individuals with social anxiety when it co-occurs with an alcohol use disorder

  • (Pettinati) Determine best course of treatment for patients with both drinking problems and major depression

  • (Pettinati) Determine if a differential DSM-IV diagnosis of major vs substance-induced depression at intake changes predictions re: drinking outcomes or depression

  • (Brady) Discuss the prevalence of co-occurring mood, anxiety and substance use disorder

  • (Brady) Describe the pharmacotherapeutic treatment of co-occurring mood, anxiety and substance use disorders

  • (Brady) Describe the psychotherapeutic treatment of co-occurring mood, anxiety and substance use disorder

  • (Dugan, O'Mara & Hennessee) Identify evidence based treatments that have been shown to benefit treatment of individuals with Co-occurring disorders

  • (Dugan, O'Mara & Hennessee) Identify systemic challenges that interfere with the successful implementation of Co-occurring disorders treatment teams 

  • (McGeorge) Identify the co-occurring infrastructure changes being made in South Carolina

Parking

Please plan to arrive early. Traffic into Charleston during rush hour can be extremely congested and parking around MUSC is limited.  It is strongly recommended that you car-pool if possible. Parking is available at the parking garage located at President and Doughty Street behind the College of Nursing.  Parking fees are the responsibility of the attendee.

  • The Medical University of South Carolina designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
  • The SC Board of Examiners in Psychology will approve 6 Category A credits. 
  • The SC Board of Social Work Examiners will approve 6 hours of general credit. 
  • The SC Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors, Marriage & Family Therapists, and Psycho-Educational Specialists will approve 6 hours of CE credit. 
  • For all other health professionals, MUSC will award . Continuing Education Units.
