Gotta Have a Drink: Social Anxiety and Alcohol Use Disorders

Presentation Description
Dr. Book will present recent research conducted at the Charleston Alcohol Research Center on treatment strategies for social anxiety disorder when it co-occurs with an alcohol use disorder.
Speaker Objectives
At the completion of this session the participant should be able to:
  1. Identify socially anxious individuals among alcohol treatment seekers

  2. Identify at risk drinkers among anxiety treatment seekers

  3. Understand treatment options for individuals with social anxiety when it co-occurs with an alcohol use disorder.

Speaker Biography
Dr. Book received her bachelor's degree in Biology from the Johns Hopkins University and her MD degree from Duke University School of Medicine.  She then completed her residency training in General Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center and a fellowship in Anxiety Disorders at Medical University of South Carolina.  She became board certified in Psychiatry and in Addiction Medicine before completing a Masters Degree in Clinical Research at Medical University of South Carolina to prepare her for a research career in the intersection of psychiatric and addiction disorders.  In addition to her research , some of which she will talk about today, Dr. Book has an active clinical practice, teaches medical students and psychiatry residents, and is a busy wife and a mother of three children: George, Sam and Anna.
