Make the Connection
Cancer is a pervasive disease. It strikes not only patients, but also those called upon to lead the fight for life.

Fortunately, MUSC Hollings Cancer Center was established in 1993 with the sole mission of fostering prevention and healing of cancer through discovery and understanding. Great care has been taken in assembling a team of world renowned cancer experts: physicians; researchers in basic, translational and clinical science; and an exceptional support staff. Equal care has been given to ensuring the most advanced resources, facilities and technology.

The investment has paid off. In little more than 10 years, MUSC Hollings Cancer Center has emerged as a leader in cancer treatment and research. We are a source of superior multidisciplinary care, cutting-edge research, and innovative programs that seek to limit the effects of cancer through early detection, curative treatment and support.

Each year, physicians from across the Southeast make the connection with MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. They do so because they are confident their patients will receive the very latest treatments and individualized support.

The Pursuit of Excellence: NCI Designation
National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation is awarded to a select few cancer centers that offer exceptional programs in patient care, prevention, research and control, and education.

MUSC Hollings Cancer Center has made great strides in these areas. We are positioned to become the first cancer program in South Carolina to earn NCI designation, having secured a planning grant from NCI to assist us in becoming a world class cancer center.

In 2005, MUSC will complete an ambitious $50 million expansion and renovation of the Hollings Cancer Center. Already the state’s largest cancer center, the new seven-story structure more than doubles the amount of space for patient care and triples the space for research. At the same time, the building includes amenities to enhance patients’ experience, such as valet parking, a welcoming lobby, chapel, library, café, healing garden, and a special store for cancer patients and their families.

State Collaborations
MUSC has a number of initiatives with the University of South Carolina, Clemson Univerisity, the College of Charleston and other universities and hospitals committed to improving cancer treatment, promoting prevention strategies and raising public awareness.

A Multidisciplinary Approach
Recognizing the complexity of cancer and the individual nature of the disease, MUSC Hollings Cancer Center employs a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer. Experts in various aspects of cancer form powerful teams focused on developing the optimal course of action for individual patients. In addition to medical specialists unique to different forms of cancer, teams may include a medical oncologist, surgical oncologist, radiation oncologist, pathologist, radiologist, clinical trial specialist, primary nurse, clinical psychologist and social worker. The synergy created by bringing together specialists from multiple fields gives patients a tremendous advantage in fighting cancer, ultimately leading to better outcomes.

At MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, new patients often have the opportunity to see all appropriate specialists in the same day, at the same location. The team then meets immediately to develop an integrated treatment plan that is designed not only to reverse the progress of cancer, but also to improve the quality of life for patients.

MUSC is committed to fighting cancer wherever it occurs in the body, including, but not limited to, the areas covered by the following comprehensive programs.
