MUSC background

Where Quality Drives Care

MUSC Health places high value on ensuring the provision of high-quality care and cultivating a culture of safety for its patients. Continuous quality improvement is hard-wired into its strategic plan and into the performance evaluation of clinical staff. This requires adherence to evidence-based protocols that improve patient safety, such as timeouts before surgery and central line insertion and maintenance care bundles. Daily “Safely Speaking” emails inform clinical staff of evidence-based methods for improving quality and safety. Clinical leadership is fully committed to the transparency and open communication needed to identify areas for improvement and address them. It has instituted safety rounds, which enable frontline staff to express safety and quality concerns directly to clinical leaders, who can institute change. As a result of these efforts, MUSC Health was recognized in 2012 by the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), which named MUSC Health as a Rising Star, meaning that it had increased 20 or more spots in the UHC Quality and Accountability Study rankings, the second time in five  years it earned that distinction. In 2013, MUSC Health was again ranked among the top 25 academic medical centers by UHC (#22).
