MUSC background

A Leading Institute of Psychiatry

MUSC’s Institute of Psychiatry (IOP), which provides state-of-the-art care for a full range of psychiatric problems, has been named South Carolina Hospital of the Year by the National Alliance on Mental Health four of the past five times the award was given, most recently in 2012. The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is one of only 21 Comprehensive Depression Centers recognized by the National Network of Depression. The IOP, often in collaboration with the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, offers innovative and evidence-based care for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For example, the IOP helps veterans overcome PTSD’s signature anxiety and avoidance by exposing them to combat scenarios via virtual reality. The Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs (CDAP) is one of the nation’s premier academic centers for the study and treatment of alcohol and substance abuse. U.S. News & World Report recognized CDAP as being the eleventh best drug and alcohol abuse academic program in the nation.
