Professional Profile: Bruce Ovbiagele, M.D., MSc, MAS

Bruce Ovbiagele, M.D., MSc, MAS, is Professor and Chair of Neurology, in the Department of Neurosciences at the Medical University of South Carolina. He joined MUSC in 2012 from the University of California San Diego, where he was the Director of the Veterans Administration Stroke Program and the Stroke Prevention Program.

Dr. Ovbiagele is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association, and the American Heart Association Stroke Council. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers on stroke epidemiology, stroke prevention, and T2/T3 translational stroke research. He is also a member of the American Society of Neuroimaging and the American Heart Association Council on Epidemiology and Prevention.

Dr. Ovbiagele serves as Chair of the Minority Affairs Committee of the American Heart Association Stroke Council and is a member of the American Academy of Neurology Education Committee and Cerebrovascular/Critical Care/ Interventional Topics Writing Committee. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases and as an assistant editor of Stroke and has served as a reviewer for numerous other journals. He is an active researcher, and his research portfolio has included funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, and industry.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Ovbiagele has mentored numerous residents and fellows. He has served as an oral board examiner and as a member of the Vascular Neurology Examination Writing Committee for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Ovbiagele completed his residency at the University of California, Irvine, and his fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles.  He is board certified in neurology and vascular neurology.
