- About MUSC Health
The Comprehensive Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center at MUSC, a Joint Commission–certified primary stroke center, recently received a 2014 Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, the fourth year in a row that it has earned this honor. This award recognizes exceptional care for stroke patients based on evidence-based guidelines, in particular the dramatic improvements in MUSC’s door-to-needle time (the time between hospital arrival and administration of thrombolytic therapy), which decreased from a mean of 107 minutes in 2011 to 56 in 2012 to 41 in 2013 (national recommendation: <60).
Stroke specialists at MUSC received two of the three top honors at the 2013 International Stroke Conference. Robert J. Adams, M.D., MS, Director of the South Carolina REACH Stroke Network, REACH MUSC, and the South Carolina Stroke Center of Economic Excellence, received the David G. Sherman Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions in the stroke field. Marc I. Chimowitz, MBChB, Professor in MUSC’s Department of Neurosciences, received the William M. Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Stroke, which recognizes significant contributions to clinical research in stroke. A recent example of Dr. Chimowitz’s contribution to stroke research is the October 2013 Lancet article reporting the final results of the multisite SAMMPRIS trial (NCT00576693), of which he is the principal investigator.
