Professional Profile: Rita M. Ryan, M.D.

Rita M. Ryan, M.D. is the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Science.  Before coming to MUSC in 2011, Dr. Ryan was Chief of the Division of Neonatology, Director of the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program, and Director of the Center for Developmental Biology of the Lung at the University of Buffalo, State University of New York (SUNY). 

Dr. Ryan, an authority in neonatal pulmonary issues, has a research interest in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and the effects of hyperoxia.  She was the Principal Investigator (PI) on the Prematurity and Respiratory Outcome Program funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and was the site PI of the Trial of Late Surfactant study, also funded by NHLBI.  Her current interests include the role of T-lymphocytes in BPD and natriuretic peptides in neonatal transition.

Dr. Ryan serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Perinatology and is a reviewer for several other professional publications.  She is a member of the Society for Pediatric Research, the Perinatal Research Society, and the American Pediatric Society.

Dr. Ryan received her undergraduate degree in Mathematical Sciences from the Johns Hopkins University.  She holds a medical degree from SUNY-Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and completed her residency in Pediatrics there as well.  She pursued further training through a Neonatology Fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where her research mentor was Dr. Jeffrey Whitsett, a premier lung molecular biologist.
