Professional Profile: Mark S. Sothmann, PhD
Mark S. Sothmann, PhD, is Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). In August 2013, he was named Interim President by the MUSC Board of Trustees. He also holds an appointment as Professor in MUSC’s College of Health Professions (CHP) and is the former Dean of the CHP. Prior to coming to MUSC in 2007, he was Associate Dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine and founding Dean of the Indiana University School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences from 2004 through 2007. He was a founding faculty member of the Indiana University School of Informatics and he secured federal funding to create the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences and Engineering Research.
Dr. Sothmann serves on numerous national science and health care education advisory boards. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and of the American Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions and has served in leadership roles for those two organizations. Dr. Sothmann is a recipient of the University of Wisconsin Foundation Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Endeavors and the Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., M.D. Experience Excellence Recognition Award for Service to Indiana University.
He earned his B.S. in history from the University of Northern Iowa, and an M.S. and a PhD from Purdue University, both in exercise science.
