Pulmonary Hypertension Program : Pulmonary Hypertension Specialists
Program Director

Kristin Highland, MD, MS, FACP, FCCP, is the director of the Multidisciplinary Pulmonary Hypertension Program at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine. Dr. Highland is a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine and fellowship trained at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is board-certified in internal medicine, critical care, and pulmonary medicine. She is also board-eligible in rheumatology. Her areas of interest include pulmonary hypertension and interstitial lung disease in the rheumatic diseases and clinical research in pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Nurse Coordinator
Kim Egbert
Kim Egbert, RN, MSN, is the Nurse Coordinator of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program. She is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Nursing and received a Master of Science in Nursing (Adult Critical Care) from the Medical University of South Carolina. Her interests include critical care nursing, pulmonary hypertension and related clinical research.
Pulmonary Specialist
Charlie Strange
Charlie Strange, MD, FCCP, is Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine. Dr. Strange is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia and fellowship trained at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is board-certified in internal medicine, critical care and pulmonary medicine. His areas of interest include primary pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary hypertension in liver disease, interstitial lung disease, and scleroderma.
Cardiac Specialists
Christopher Neilsen
Christopher Nielsen, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiology. Dr. Nielsen is a graduate of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University and fellowship trained at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology. He is director of the adult cardiac catheterization labs, and the interventional fellowship program. His areas of interest interventional cardiology and the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension.
Marian Taylor
Marian Taylor, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Cardiology. Dr. Taylor is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina, where she also completed fellowships in cardiology and rheumatology. She is board-certified in internal medicine. Her areas of interest include rheumatologic cardiac disease, scleroderma pulmonary hypertension and echocardiography in pulmonary hypertension.
Rheumatology Specialist
Richard Silver
Richard Silver, MD, FACP, is a Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology. Dr. Silver is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and completed his fellowship at the University of California at San Diego. He is board-certified in internal medicine and rheumatology. His areas of interest include pulmonary hypertension in the connective tissue diseases and scleroderma interstitial lung disease.
Pharmacy Specialist
Wendy Bullington
Wendy Bullington, PharmD, BCPS, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy and Clinical Sciences and the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Pulmonary and Emergency Medicine. Dr. Bullington completed both her PharmD training and two-year Pharmacotherapy specialty residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is board-certified in pharmacotherapy. Her interest areas include the medical management of pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, and sarcoidosis.
Basic Scientist
Kusumam Joseph
Kusumam Joseph, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Rheumatology. Dr. Joseph is a graduate of the University of Poona, India and did her post-doctoral training at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Joseph is a vascular biologist and her areas of interests include mechanisms of plasma bradykinin generation, characterization of cell surface receptors, signaling pathways related to kinin-forming cascade and interaction of bradykinin and endothelin-1 in pulmonary arterial hypertension.
