MUSC PANCREAS Surgery program OF EXCELLENCE

Frey Procedure

The popular Puestow procedure can alleviate the complications of chronic pancreatitis by rerouting the pancreatic duct so it empties pancreatic enzymes directly into the small intestine. The Frey procedure is a variation of the same surgery in which the physician also cores out damaged sections of the pancreatic head to improve drainage of the enzymes that are produced by the pancreas and emptied through the duct. The overriding goal: efficient flow of pancreatic enzymes to the small intestine.
