MUSC PANCREAS Surgery program OF EXCELLENCE

Endoscopic Sphincterotomy

The current standard for treatment of SOD is endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES), where the sphincter of Oddi muscle is cut to relieve the pressure. ES is performed at specialized centers such as MUSC. Successful pain relief is achieved in 55 to 95% of patients after this intervention, depending on patient selection. Three randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the efficacy of ES in properly selected patients.
