Dr. Muirhead received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he received the Ziegler Prize for the outstanding student in gross anatomy. He began his postgraduate training in General Surgery at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency and an Orthopaedic Traumatology fellowship at Brown University School of Medicine/Rhode Island Hospital. He also went on to complete a Fellowship in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine/Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery. Dr. Muirhead is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeonand Board Certified in Orthopaedics with Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. Prior to moving to Charleston in 2005 and joining the faculty of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Muirhead held academic appointments at Brown University Medical School and the University of Louisville Medical School and also worked at the Kleinert Institute for two years.
