MUSC Nutrition Services : Wellness : Wellness Education Resources : Dietary Guidelines : Mechanical Soft Diet Guidelines

A mechanical soft diet may be prescribed for you if you have difficulty chewing or swallowing. In general, the foods recommended are chopped, ground, or blenderized and prepared with added liquids to make them easier for you to eat.

Foods to avoid: foods containing nuts or seeds, tough meats, hard or thick breads, fruit with seeds or skin, raw fruits and vegetables, dried fruits

Foods recommended: soft breads, cooked cereals, ready-to-eat cereals softened in milk, canned fruit, fruit juices, cooked vegetables, ground meat, soft scrambled eggs, cooked dry beans and peas, soft cheese such as ricotta and cottage cheese, yogurt without fruit, custards and puddings, cream soups, noodles

If you would like more information on this diet, ask your doctor to refer you to an MUSC Outpatient Dietitian. Call MUSC Outpatient Scheduling at 843-876-0888.
