MUSC Nutrition Services : Wellness : Wellness Education Resources : Dietary Guidelines : Increasing Iron Diet Guidelines

Why do we need iron? When you do not get enough iron, your blood can’t carry oxygen throughout your body. Without oxygen, your body may feel tired and weak. You may also get cold easily or have trouble concentrating.

1.Eat food high in iron every day. Foods high in iron include:
  • Red Meat
  • Nuts and Peanut butter
  • Tofu
  • Black beans
  • Lima Beans
  • Dried fruit
  • Broccoli
  • Greens
  • Iron Fortified Cereals and grains
2.Eating foods high in Vitamin C when you eat foods high in iron will help your body use the iron better. Foods such as citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, melons and peppers all contain high amounts of Vitamin C.
3.Caffeine makes it harder for your body to get the iron it needs. Avoid caffeinated products, especially when you eat high iron foods.
4.Try cooking foods in an iron skillet.

If you would like more information on this diet, ask your doctor to refer you to an MUSC Outpatient Dietitian. Call MUSC Outpatient Scheduling at 843-876-0888.
