Cholesterol and Triglycerides are fat-like substances in your blood. They can build up and cause damage to your blood vessels and body. It is wise to limit the amount of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat in your diet to help naturally decrease total cholesterol and triglycerides. Healthy food habits can not only lower your cholesterol and triglycerides but they can decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Choose five or more per day. Eat a variety of whole grain products including breads, pastas and cereals. Avoid white bread, pasta and cereals. Include fat-free and low-fat milk products, fish, legumes (beans), skinless poultry and lean meats. Choose fats with 2 grams of saturated fat or less per serving. Limit foods high in saturated fat such as beef and fatty meats, whole milk products, coconut oils, egg yolks, hydrogenated oils and organ meats. Maintain a healthy body weight and stay active.
Also watch out for hidden fat that can be in cakes, candy, pastries, chips and snacks, fried foods and creamy sauces such as Alfredo. If you would like more information on this diet, ask your doctor to refer you to an MUSC Outpatient Dietitian. Call MUSC Outpatient Scheduling at 843-876-0888. |
