Nutrition Services : Nutrition News : Nutrition Class Offered to Speech Students

To ensure optimal nutrition status is achieved and/or maintained, patients who have swallowing difficulties require the expertise of a Registered Dietitian and a Speech Therapist.  To promote best practices and to strengthen the relationship between these two (2) disciplines, Emily Whitehead, RD and Rachael Burkett, RD, recently conducted a nutrition lecture for thirty (30) MUSC Speech students.

The lecture focused on the role of the Registered Dietitian, the rationale for aggressive and appropriate nutrition intervention, and the benefits of effective communication between team members.

At the conclusion of the lecture, the students were able to practice their nutrition skills by calculating nutrition equations and completing a case study . When these Speech students begin their careers as Speech Therapist, they will have a deeper appreciation of the role of the Registered Dietitian and a greater understanding of the importance of a multidisciplinary  approach to nutrition support.
