National Nutrition Month Proclamation & Other Events

National Nutrition Month is always an exciting time for MUSC and Sodexo, and this year was no exception as employees and interns alike worked diligently to promote this years’ theme, Eat Right with Color.  One particular highlight of the month was the reading of Mayor Riley’s official proclamation declaring March as National Nutrition Month and March 9th as Registered Dietitian Day in the city of Charleston.

National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month, a campaign sponsored by the American Dietetic Association to promote healthy living.  This year’s theme, “ Eat Right with Color,” focuses on adding a variety of colors to your plate.  A rainbow of foods creates a palette of nutrients for a healthful diet.

Optimizing Nutrition in Very Low Birth Weight Babies

Carrie Finch, RD, CNSC, and Cecilia Kennedy, RD, participate as Vermont Oxford team members with the Neonatology group at MUSC, focusing on optimizing nutrition in very low-birth weight infants (VLBW).  Through  Learning and Improvement Community, six (6) “potentially better practice” (PBP) have been identified.  Learn More

Keto Cooking Training

To enhance the palatability of the ketogenic diet, Nutricia sponsored Chef Neil Pallister-Bosomworth, a chef from the United Kingdom, to design carbohydrate-rich foods that are compatible with the diet. Cooking demo tour kicked off at MUSC.

Teaming Up With Future Speech Therapist

To ensure optimal nutrition status is achieved or maintained, patients who suffer from swallowing difficulties require the expertise of a Registered Dietitian and a Speech Therapist. To strengthen this partnership, Registered Dietitians conduct a nutrition lecture for MUSC Speech students.

Certified Nutrition Support Clinician Credentials

The National Board of Nutrition Support Certification developed a new credential, the Certified Nutrition support Clinical (CNSC) that is valid for all professional disciplines involved in nutrition support.  The CNSD credential identifies clinicians as qualified nutrition support providers.  Four (4) MUSC/ Sodexo Registered Dietitians successfully completed this new credential in May.

Cafeteria Undergoes Renovation

Starting in May, the MUSC University Hospital cafeteria began undergoing a multi-phased renovation project.  The renovation plans feature a new cafeteria entrance, expansion of cooking stations, new doctors' dining room and main dining area seating.  The project is projected to take four (4) months.

“Fat Tax” to Help Fight Childhood Obesity

The MUSC STOP Lite Vending program is being piloted in the vending machines at the entrance to the MUSC cafeteria.  Red, Yellow, and Green labels help the consumer know which snacks to avoid (red), which snacks to choose occasionally, and which snacks are healthier choices (green).  A 5 cent surcharge has been added to the “red” labeled items which will be used to fund MUSC’s children’s obesity program Heart Health.

Seinsheimer Cardiovascular Health Program (SCHP) Opens!

A  new  cardiovascular health program opened in September at  Ashley River Tower.  The center offers comprehensive cardiovascular exams, nutrition assessments, counseling, rehabilitation, weight management and exercise.
