Choosing a vegetarian diet can be a healthy way to eat but it does require some planning. If you have any serious medical conditions, ask your doctor or dietitian if a vegetarian diet is right for you. Eat a wide variety of foods to help get adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals. Monitor your food choices to make sure you consume enough calories including fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Plant proteins can be combined to form complete proteins that are more useful for your body. For instance, beans and rice, oats and almonds, or chick-peas and corn are all “complementary proteins.” Supplementation may be required for some vitamins and minerals such as calcium, riboflavin, and vitamin B12.
