MUSC Nutrition Services : Dietary Guidelines : Snack Guidelines for Children

Snacks should always have nutritional value.

One snack between each main meal is sufficient.

Never give a toddler a snack unless the child is sitting upright– if the child doesn’t chew food
completely it is easy for him to choke.

Until child has learned to chew properly, make sure that bite-sized pieces of foods are small
enough (about ¼ inch in diameter) to minimize chance of choking

Appropriate snack suggestions for toddlers:

  • Pureed or finely diced and peeled fruits and veggies such as apples, applesauce, pears, bananas, oranges, carrots, celery, and tomatoes
  • Cooked root and leafy vegetables
  • Small cubes of cheese
  • Half slice of bread or crackers
  • Custard, pudding, yogurt
  • Fruit and vegetable juice

Appropriate snack suggestions for preschoolers & school age children:

  • Whole raw vegetables, salads
  • Fresh, dried, or canned unsweetened fruit or applesauce
  • Dry cereal, whole wheat breads, bagels, or low-fat crackers
  • Cheese/peanut butter crackers or sandwich
  • Popcorn (unsalted)
  • Ice milk, cheese, and yogurt made with skim or low fat milk
  • Leftover chicken or turkey
  • Nuts and dried fruit
