MUSC Nutrition Services : Dietary Guidelines : Lactose Intolerance Diet Guidelines

If dairy products cause stomach pain, diarrhea or gas, you may be lactose intolerant. Use the following guidelines to help you avoid these side effects.

Avoid milk and milk products or use milk only in small amounts. One half cup of milk (or less) may be tolerated when eaten with other foods.

Over-the-counter lactose digestive enzyme tablets may help reduces lactose-intolerance symptoms.

Milk, cheese, cream, ice cream, custard, pudding, pies with custard filling, chocolate, instant drink mixes, foods prepared with milk, cream sauce or cheese sauce, cream soups

Soy milk or rice milk with added calcium, lactose-free milk substitutes, yogurt (if tolerated), milk-free beverages, tomato based sauces
